People often use “Dharamshala” and “McLeodganj” as if they were the same place. They are not — they are two towns, about 9 km and a 20–30 minute drive apart, with quite different characters. Getting the difference right is the single most useful thing for planning where to stay. Here is the plain version.
Dharamshala — the bigger town, lower down
Dharamshala proper is the district headquarters, spread across the lower slopes. It is larger, more workaday and quieter in the evenings — Kotwali Bazar, the government offices, the HPCA cricket stadium (the prettiest ground in India), Civil Lines and the War Memorial. It is closer to Kangra, Gaggal airport and the temples, and rooms tend to be a little easier on the budget. Stay here if you want space, calm evenings, easy temple access, and a base for runs down to Kangra and the valley.
McLeodganj — Little Lhasa, up the hill
McLeodganj sits about 9 km higher up, and it is where most tourists picture “Dharamshala”. This is the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile — the Tsuglagkhang (Dalai Lama temple), the Tibetan markets and monasteries, the café culture, Bhagsunag falls, Dharamkot and the Triund trailhead. It is livelier, more walkable and more atmospheric, but pricier and busier, and the last climb up can crawl in season. Stay here if you want the buzz, the Tibetan culture and the trekking on your doorstep — our Kangra to McLeodganj taxi covers the run up.
So which should you choose?
For a first visit, most travellers stay in McLeodganj for the culture and the walking, and day-trip down. For families, elders, temple pilgrims or anyone who wants quieter nights and lower rates, Dharamshala (or Kangra itself) is the smarter base. The good news is that it barely matters logistically — the two are half an hour apart, and with a car for the day you can stay in one and see both easily. A relaxed day of sightseeing covers McLeodganj, Dharamshala and the viewpoints in one unhurried loop.
Don’t miss, in and around both

- Triund — the classic day-hike ridge above McLeodganj, best in autumn.
- HPCA Cricket Stadium and the War Memorial — on the Dharamshala side.
- Naddi viewpoint — the Dhauladhar sunset point above McLeodganj.
- Norbulingka Institute and the Kangra Fort & Masroor temples — easy drives down the valley.
