Palampur is the far end of the valley from Amb, which makes it exactly the trip where a pre-booked car earns its money — three hours with one change of vehicle is a very different day from three hours with three.

The road runs up past Chintpurni into the Kangra valley, through Kangra town, and then east along the Dhauladhar with the tea gardens opening out on both sides for the last stretch. It is a genuinely good drive and we will stop for photographs if you want them.

A fair number of these bookings are for the agricultural university or for the tea-estate stays around Neugal Khad, both of which are awkward to reach with luggage by bus. Give us the exact property or department and the driver will take you to the door.
