Dharamshala is the busiest road in our week. We are up and down it several times a day — guests off the Gaggal flight, families going to the Zonal Hospital, cricket crowds at the HPCA ground, residents heading down to Kangra for the bank or the market.
The town is strung out over a steep hillside, which is the thing visitors underestimate: Kotwali Bazaar, Dari, Sidhbari and McLeodganj are all "Dharamshala" and all a real drive apart. Tell us the actual address and we will tell you honestly how long it takes and what it costs, rather than quoting a flat "Dharamshala" fare and adding to it later.
For anyone based here without a car, we also do the day work — a morning at Norbulingka, an afternoon in the tea gardens at Palampur, a run out to Chamunda Devi — on an hourly or day basis with the driver staying with you.

A full day, car and driver
Dharamshala and McLeodganj are usually done together, and the order matters — go up early, come down as the crowds arrive.

Twenty minutes up. Tsuglagkhang before nine is calm; the same visit at midday on a Saturday is a crowd and a parking problem.

Bhagsunag and the falls
The temple and the waterfall above Bhagsu — a gentle twenty-minute walk from where we drop you.

Naddi and Dal Lake
The viewpoint at Naddi gives you the Dhauladhar wall head-on; Dal Lake below it is small and best treated as a stop rather than a destination.

Back down to Dharamshala
Kotwali Bazaar for lunch and the market, then the War Memorial in the pines below town.

HPCA stadium
The cricket ground with the mountains directly behind the stands. Worth the ten minutes even with no match on.

Norbulingka
The Tibetan arts institute at Sidhbari, about twenty minutes out — workshops, gardens and the temple. It closes late afternoon, so it is this or the stadium.
Good to know locally
The upper town is slow
The road above Kotwali Bazaar is narrow and on season weekends it crawls. Everything above Dharamshala takes longer than the distance suggests.
Parking in McLeodganj
There genuinely is not enough of it. We drop you and go rather than circling, and collect you at a named point when you call.

Can you pick me up from my Dharamshala hotel?
