Palampur sits an hour east of us on the Dhauladhar road, and the run there is one of the prettiest hours of driving in the valley — tea gardens on both sides and the range standing straight up behind them.

The work here is a mix. Residents and students at the agricultural university need runs down to Kangra, Gaggal and Tanda. Visitors staying in the tea estates want a car for the day to see Andretta, Bir Billing and Baijnath. And a steady stream of people need the long drive out to Chandigarh or Delhi, which we do direct from Palampur without you first getting yourself to Dharamshala.

Bir Billing is close enough from Palampur to be an easy morning, so paragliding drops and pickups are a regular ask, including the awkward ones, where you take off at Billing and need collecting at the Bir landing ground an hour later.

Everything here is close together and the roads are gentle, which makes Palampur the easiest full day in the valley.

  1. Morning

    The tea estates

    The road runs between the gardens with the Dhauladhar directly overhead. The factory takes visitors on most working days and is worth the half hour.

  2. Late morning

    Neugal Khad

    The stream-side promenade below town, with the mountain wall behind it. Ten minutes out and the reason most people come.

  3. Midday

    Andretta

    The potters’ village and the Norah Richards house. Both keep their own hours and can be shut midweek. We ring ahead rather than drive you to a locked gate.

    Baijnath

    The 13th-century Shiv temple, still in daily use. A short drive on from Andretta and the oldest thing you will see all day.

  5. Late

    Bir Billing

    Half an hour further: the landing field, the Tibetan colony and the monasteries. If the wind was right that morning, the sky above it will be full.

  6. Evening

    Back via Chamunda

    The temple on the Baner river is on the road home and catches the evening aarti nicely.

Flying at Billing

Take-off is at Billing, 14 km above Bir on a rough road; landing is at Bir. If you are flying we drop at Bir and the operator runs you up.

The university

CSK HP Agricultural University is a common pickup — say which gate, because the campus spans the main road.
