Palampur is an hour and a half from the valley airport, which means the first Delhi flight is a pre-dawn start. We do those constantly — the car is outside before you are awake enough to worry about it.

The road runs west along the Dhauladhar through Nagrota Bagwan and Kangra, and it is straightforward except in the morning school-run hour, which we plan around rather than get caught in.

Coming the other way, we track the inbound flight. Gaggal is a small airport and the taxis outside it disappear quickly once a flight has landed, so a booked car is worth the small effort.
