A proper hill journey — down the valley to Nurpur, then the winding climb over Chowari Jot into Chamba district, with the Pir Panjal opening up as you rise. It rewards a driver who knows the bends.

How we drive it.

Five hours is a long transfer and we would rather say so upfront. It is a good five hours — across the Kangra valley, out past Nurpur and then climbing into Chamba district through deodar forest — but it is not a short hop, and anyone landing off a morning train should expect to reach Dalhousie in the late afternoon.

Doing it in one car matters on this route. The alternative is a bus to Pathankot and another up the hill, with a change and a wait in the middle of the day, and by the time you have done that you have lost the day entirely.

Khajjiar is about an hour beyond Dalhousie and almost everyone adds it — usually the next morning rather than tacked onto the arrival day. Chamba town and the Manimahesh road carry on from there if you have longer.

The climb is the memorable bit

Chamba too

The town is 45 minutes past Banikhet and has the Bhuri Singh museum and the Lakshmi Narayan temples. Worth a day of its own.
