Hamirpur to Dharamshala is one of those Himachal journeys that looks short on a map and is not — a hundred kilometres of hill road through Nadaun and Dehra, about three hours.

A good part of this traffic is NIT Hamirpur: students and staff heading for Gaggal airport or into Dharamshala, particularly at the start and end of term when everything is busy at once. Book ahead in those weeks.

The road follows the Beas for a stretch after Nadaun, which is the pleasant part, and then climbs into the valley proper. Jwala Ji is a short detour if you want darshan on the way.

The Beas stretch through Nadaun is flat and unwinding — this is one of the easier three-hour drives in the state if anyone travels badly.

Flying out of Gaggal

The airport is on this route, 30 minutes short of Dharamshala. If that is where you are headed we stop there rather than going up and back.
