About the trip
The valley's deep story, close to home.
The Kangra valley is one of the oldest inhabited corners of the hills, and its heritage is remarkable — the vast Kangra Fort above the Banganga, the mysterious rock-cut Masroor temples often called the 'Himalayan Ellora', and shrines that have drawn pilgrims for a thousand years.
We string them together at an easy pace — Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra town, the Baijnath Shiv temple, the Kangra Art Museum and, if you like, a short ride on the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley toy train through the fields and tunnels.
How it runs from here: everything on this trip is within an hour of our own base, so it is the one tour with no transfer day at either end and no early starts. That makes it the easiest thing we run for elders and for anyone with only a weekend. The fort takes a morning, Masroor an afternoon with the drive, and the temples fit around them. If the toy train happens to be running a useful service on your day, we fold in a short scenic stretch.

What is Kangra Fort and how long do we need there?
It is one of the oldest and largest forts in the Himalaya, standing on a spur above the meeting of the Banganga and Manjhi rivers, held by the Katoch rajas for centuries and badly damaged in the 1905 earthquake. Allow an hour and a half to two hours, including the audio tour and the small museum at the gate. The climb inside is gentle but uneven underfoot.
What are the Masroor temples?
Fifteen temples carved directly out of a single sandstone ridge in the 8th century — often called the Himalayan Ellora. They are about 35 km from Kangra town and take roughly an hour each way. The 1905 earthquake left them cracked and weathered, which is part of why they feel so unvisited. Half a day covers them properly.
Does the Kangra Valley toy train still run?
The narrow-gauge line from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar does run, but services and sections change often and the schedule is not something to build a day around. We treat it as an optional short hop — usually a scenic stretch such as Kangra to Palampur — and confirm on the day whether it is running before we commit to it.
Can this be done in one day?
The fort, Brajeshwari Devi temple and the Kangra Art Museum fit comfortably into one day. Adding Masroor and Baijnath makes it two, which is the version we usually suggest — the point of this trip is not to rush past thousand-year-old stone.
Is this a good trip in the monsoon?
Better than most. These are low-altitude sites on good roads, and the valley is at its greenest in July and August. The fort and Masroor are open-air, so you want a break in the rain, but there is none of the landslide risk that makes the high routes unwise at that time.
What is the best time for the Kangra valley heritage trip?
All year — this is our own valley and nothing on it depends on a pass being open. October to November and March to June give the clearest Dhauladhar backdrop for the fort and Masroor. Even in the monsoon the temples and the museum work perfectly well.
What is at Masroor, and is it worth the drive?
Fifteen rock-cut temples carved out of a single sandstone ridge in the eighth century, about 35 km from Kangra. It is the most underrated thing in the valley — usually almost empty — and yes, it is worth the forty minutes each way.
