Chamba and Manimahesh tour from Kangra

About the trip
An old kingdom and a sacred lake.
Chamba is one of the Himalaya's oldest princely towns — the grassy Chowgan at its centre, the carved stone Lakshmi Narayan temple complex, the Bhuri Singh Museum of Pahari miniatures and the Chamunda Devi shrine on the hill above the Ravi.
From there the road climbs to Bharmour, seat of the ancient Chaurasi temples, and on toward Hadsar — the trailhead for the Manimahesh Kailash yatra, whose glacial lake mirrors the peak sacred to Lord Shiva. We drive you to the road-head and arrange the onward help you need.
How it runs from here: Chamba is a long day out via Nurpur and Chowari Jot, and Bharmour a further two hours of climbing beyond it. The road ends at Hadsar — that is the honest limit of what any vehicle can do, and the lake is a hard 13 km trek above it. We drive you to the road-head, wait, and arrange ponies, porters or a helicopter seat where those are running. If you are walking, we would rather add an acclimatisation night at Bharmour than watch you struggle at 4,000 m.

Chamba & Manimahesh — questions travellers ask
When is the Manimahesh yatra, and can we go outside it?
The main yatra falls around Janmashtami and Radhashtami, usually late August or early September, when the trail and the lake are at their busiest. The road to Hadsar is open roughly May to October, so you can visit Chamba and Bharmour outside the yatra season and have them almost to yourself — the lake trek itself is only sensible in that window.
Do you drive all the way to Manimahesh Lake?
No — no vehicle can. The road ends at Hadsar, and from there it is roughly 13 km of steep trail to the lake at about 4,080 m, usually taken over one or two days. We drive you to Hadsar, wait for you, and help arrange ponies, porters or a helicopter seat where those are running. We are honest about this because some operators are not.
How fit do you need to be for the Hadsar trail?
Fit enough for a long, high, sustained climb. It is a pilgrimage route rather than a technical trek, and people of all ages walk it, but altitude sickness is a real risk above Dhancho and the weather turns fast. If there is any doubt, spend a night at Bharmour to acclimatise first — we build that in when asked.
What is worth seeing in Chamba town itself?
The Lakshmi Narayan temple complex — six stone shikhara temples from the 10th century onward — the Bhuri Singh Museum with its Pahari miniature paintings, the Chowgan promenade, and the Chamunda Devi temple on the hill above the Ravi. A full day is not too much.
How many days should we allow for Chamba and Manimahesh?
Three if you want Chamba and Bharmour with a look at the Chaurasi temples. Four or more if you intend to walk to Manimahesh Lake, since that needs its own day or two plus a margin for weather. We would rather build in the margin than have you racing a schedule at 4,000 m.
