Barot Valley tour from Kangra

About the trip
The valley the crowds miss.
Barot lies in a fold of the Mandi hills on the Uhl river, reached by a winding road over the Jhatingri ridge. It grew up around the colonial-era Shanan hydro project, and its quirky haulage trolley still climbs the mountainside above the town.
The Uhl is a trout river — anglers come for it — and the Nargu wildlife sanctuary rises on the far bank. It is a place for slow days: a riverside walk, a plate of fresh trout, and the kind of quiet the busier valleys have lost.
How it runs from here: four to five hours out, with the last stretch over the Jhatingri ridge on single-track road — slow, and precisely the kind of road that closes for landslides in July and August. We will say so if your dates fall in the monsoon rather than take the booking and hope. Accommodation is guesthouses and riverside camps rather than hotels, so if your group wants comfort we base you at Palampur or Jogindernagar and bring you in for the day instead.

Barot Valley — questions travellers ask
How do you get to Barot, and how long is the drive?
About 110 km from Kangra, four to five hours, via Baijnath and Jogindernagar and then over the Jhatingri ridge on a narrow, winding road. The last stretch is single-track in places. It is not a hard drive for someone who knows it, but it is a slow one — this is not a place you reach in a hurry.
What is the haulage trolley?
A funicular built for the colonial-era Shanan hydro project, which still hauls up the mountainside from Barot toward Jogindernagar. It was built to carry equipment, not tourists, and whether visitors can ride depends on the day and the staff on duty — we will ask, but we will not promise it.
Can we fish for trout?
The Uhl is a trout river and there is a hatchery at Barot. Angling needs a permit from the fisheries department, which is straightforward but has to be arranged locally and in advance. Tell us early and we will point you at the right office rather than have you arrive and find out.
When should we not go to Barot?
The monsoon, mainly. That road over Jhatingri is exactly the kind that shuts for landslides in July and August, and Barot is not a place you want to be stuck. Deep winter can also bring snow on the ridge. March to June and September to November are the safe windows.
Is there anywhere decent to stay?
Simple guesthouses and riverside camps, not hotels — that is the trade for how quiet it is. We can suggest places we have actually dropped people at, and you book them directly. If you want comfort, base yourself at Palampur or Jogindernagar and come in for the day.
