Barot Valley
A quiet, green pocket on the Uhl river — trout streams, a century-old haulage trolley, and the Nargu forests, still off most travellers' maps.
About the trip
The valley the crowds miss.
Barot lies in a fold of the Mandi hills on the Uhl river, reached by a winding road over the Jhatingri ridge. It grew up around the colonial-era Shanan hydro project, and its quirky haulage trolley still climbs the mountainside above the town.
The Uhl is a trout river — anglers come for it — and the Nargu wildlife sanctuary rises on the far bank. It is a place for slow days: a riverside walk, a plate of fresh trout, and the kind of quiet the busier valleys have lost.
