Kasauli is about 250 km from Kangra, roughly seven hours, and this is the two-day version. It is a walking town — the Upper and Lower Malls are the whole of it and cars stay parked — so most people pair it with Chandigarh or Shimla rather than making the drive for Kasauli alone. About the trip
The little cantonment in the pines.
Kasauli was raised by the British as a quiet garrison town, and it has kept that gentle character — Victorian bungalows, a cobbled Mall, church bells and the smell of pine. There is little to 'do' here, and that is exactly the point.
Walk the Upper and Lower Malls, take the Gilbert nature trail along the ridge, climb to Monkey Point for the view, and watch the sun drop over the Punjab plains. The Timber Trail cable car and Sanawar lie close by.
How it runs from here: six and a half hours via Una and Chandigarh, and honestly it works best as part of a Chandigarh run rather than as a destination on its own from Kangra. Once you are up there almost nothing needs the car — the two Malls, the churches and the Gilbert trail are all within walking distance of each other. Monkey Point is the exception and the one to check in advance, because it sits inside an Air Force station with restricted entry and changing timings.

How far is Kasauli from Kangra?
About 260 km and six and a half hours, via Una and Chandigarh. It sits just above the Kalka road, so it also works well as a stop when you are heading to or from Chandigarh rather than as a destination on its own.
Is there much to do in Kasauli?
Honestly, no — and people who love it go for that reason. The Malls, the Gilbert trail, the two churches, Monkey Point and the sunset over the plains fill a day and a half at a walking pace. If your group wants activities and sights, Shimla or Chail will suit better.
Can we visit Monkey Point?
It is inside an Air Force station, so entry is restricted: Indian nationals only, photo ID required, and cameras and phones must be left at the gate. Timings change and it closes without notice. We drive you to the checkpoint and will tell you what the current rules are before you set out.
Is Kasauli good in the monsoon?
It is one of the better hill towns for it — low altitude, short walks, good roads and no landslide-prone mountain passes to cross. The pine smells wonderful in the rain. You lose the plains view on misty days, which is the main thing you go up for.
Is it suitable for elders?
Yes. The Mall walks are level and short, almost everything is close together, and the drive up from Chandigarh is gentle. Monkey Point involves a steep flight of steps at the end, which is the one part some people skip.
Is Kasauli worth the drive from Kangra?
On its own, seven hours each way for a two-day trip is a lot — Kasauli is a small walking town and the Malls are the whole of it. It works far better paired with Chandigarh or Shimla, which are on the same road. We would rather say that than sell you the drive twice.
