Shimla is about 220 km from Kangra, six and a half hours south through Hamirpur and Bilaspur, and two to three days covers the Ridge, Jakhu and Kufri. Worth knowing before you arrive: the Mall is a no-vehicle zone, so we drop at Cart Road or the lift. It runs all year. Shimla wears its colonial past well — the Ridge, Christ Church, the pedestrian Mall and the toy-train line are all part of the charm. We drive you in comfortably from Kangra and handle the tricky town parking, so you can simply walk and enjoy.
Just above town, Kufri brings horse rides, the adventure park and winter snow; Jakhu temple crowns the highest hill with its giant Hanuman statue. Naldehra and Chail make easy add-ons.
How it runs from here: the six and a half hours in through Hamirpur and Bilaspur is easy driving, and we leave early so you get an afternoon on the Ridge rather than arriving in the dark. Shimla's real problem is vehicles, not distance — the Mall and Ridge are pedestrian-only and parking sits well below them. We handle that end of it: drop at the nearest point, park, and collect wherever you finish up.

How long is the drive from Kangra to Shimla?
About 220 km and six and a half hours, through Hamirpur and Bilaspur. It is a steady, mostly good road with the last stretch climbing into the hills. We leave early so you have the afternoon on the Mall rather than arriving after dark.
Can you drive us onto the Mall Road?
No — and nobody can. The Ridge and Mall are pedestrian-only, and private vehicles stop at the designated parking below. We drop you at the closest point, handle the parking, and pick you up where you want. The lifts from Cart Road save the steepest climb up.
Is Kufri worth it?
In winter, when there is snow, yes — it is the nearest snow to Shimla and the reason most people go. Out of season it is a fairly commercial spot with pony rides and an adventure park, and honest advice is that Naldehra or Chail are pleasanter. We will tell you which is likely to be better on your dates.
Does the toy train run, and can we ride part of it?
The Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge line runs daily and is a UNESCO World Heritage railway. Riding the whole line from Kalka takes five hours and does not fit a driving trip well, but a short scenic hop — Shimla to Solan or Barog — does. Seats book out in season, so tell us early.
What about Jakhu temple?
It sits on the highest hill above the Ridge, with a huge Hanuman statue visible from most of the town. You can walk up in about half an hour from the Ridge, take the ropeway, or drive most of the way. Watch your bags and food — the monkeys there are notoriously bold.
What is the best time to visit Shimla and Kufri?
All year. March to June is peak, October and November are the clearest, and December to February brings snow at Kufri, which is exactly why most people go then. July to September is green and cheap but the views are often in cloud.
Is Shimla or Chail the better base?
Shimla if you want the Mall, the Ridge and the bustle; Chail if you want quiet. Chail is about an hour further on, far less crowded, and has the highest cricket ground in the world. We drive both and will say which suits your group rather than which is nearer.
