Amritsar tour from Kangra by car
Amritsar is about 200 km from Kangra, four and a half to five hours out through Pathankot and across Punjab, and two to three days covers the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the Wagah ceremony. About the trip
Punjab's golden heart.
Amritsar is Punjab distilled — the Golden Temple glowing on its sacred tank, the langar that feeds tens of thousands a day, and the sombre garden of Jallianwala Bagh next door. It is one of the closest big-city trips from Kangra, so even two days do it justice.
Add the Partition Museum, the Durgiana temple and the flag-lowering spectacle at the Wagah border, and finish with Amritsari kulcha and lassi in the old city. We drive you there and back, with a Chintpurni or Anandpur Sahib halt possible on the way.
How it runs from here: five hours out via Pathankot on good road, so this is one of the few trips where the driving does not shape the days. The two fixed points are the Golden Temple, which is best at dawn or after dark, and the Wagah ceremony, which starts in the late afternoon and needs you there over an hour early. We build the day around those two and leave the museums and the old-city food for the gaps between.

How far is Amritsar from Kangra?
About 200 km and four and a half to five hours via Pathankot. It is one of the easiest big-city trips from the valley, which is why two days genuinely covers it — one to reach and see the Golden Temple, one for Wagah and the museums.
What time should we see the Golden Temple?
It is open around the clock and beautiful at every hour, but early morning and after dark are the two to aim for — dawn for the palki sahib ceremony and the quiet, night for the reflection on the sarovar. Cover your head, remove your shoes, and there is free covered-locker storage at the entrance.
How does the Wagah border ceremony work?
The flag-lowering happens daily in the late afternoon — earlier in winter, later in summer — about 30 km from the city. Seating is free and unreserved, so you need to be there well over an hour ahead, and security is strict about bags. We drive you out, wait, and bring you back; expect a slow exit with the crowd.
Should we eat the langar at the Golden Temple?
Yes, if you would like to — it feeds tens of thousands a day, everyone is welcome regardless of faith, and there is no charge. Beyond that, the old city is the real food destination: kulcha, lassi and the dhabas around Hall Bazaar.
Can we stop at a temple on the way?
Chintpurni Devi sits close to the Kangra–Amritsar road and is an easy halt in either direction; Anandpur Sahib is a slightly longer detour if you want the Takht. Many families combine the Golden Temple with one or both — tell us and we will build the route around it.
Can the Golden Temple and Wagah be done in one day?
Yes, and it is the standard way to do it. The Wagah ceremony is late afternoon and the seating fills well before it starts, so the day is planned backwards from that — Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh in the morning, then out to the border around two hours ahead. The temple is open through the night if you want a calmer darshan.
