Chandigarh is about 235 km from Kangra, roughly six hours down through Una and Anandpur Sahib, and this is the short one to two-day version. Chandigarh is unlike anywhere else in the north — a city designed from scratch by Le Corbusier, laid out in green sectors with wide, orderly roads. It is the gateway between the plains and the hills, and an easy, relaxed stop in its own right.
Nek Chand's Rock Garden, a boat on Sukhna Lake, the terraced Rose Garden and the Capitol Complex fill a comfortable day or two, with the markets of Sector 17 for the evening. We run you down from Kangra and back, or use it as a staging point for onward trips.
How it runs from here: six hours down through Una on flat, fast road — the easiest long drive we do. Chandigarh is a car city with real parking, so unlike the hill towns we can drive you between sectors all day. In summer the sightseeing has to be early morning and evening, because the plains genuinely reach 40 degrees and the Rock Garden has very little shade. We also use this run as the staging point for onward trips to Delhi or the airport.

How long does it take to reach Chandigarh from Kangra?
About 235 km and six hours, through Una and the Punjab plains. It makes an easy one-night trip, and it is also the staging point we use most often for onward runs to Delhi, Shimla or the airport.
Is the Rock Garden worth it?
Very much so. Nek Chand built it secretly over years from industrial and domestic waste — a maze of courtyards, waterfalls and thousands of mosaic figures. Allow two hours; it is bigger than people expect and the route through it is one-way.
Can we visit the Capitol Complex?
Yes, but only on a guided tour at fixed times, with photo ID, and foreign nationals need to apply in advance. It is Le Corbusier's UNESCO-listed government complex — the High Court, Assembly, Secretariat and the Open Hand monument. Tell us if you want it so we can plan the day around the tour slot.
What is there to do with children?
Sukhna Lake for the boats and the promenade, the Rose Garden, the Butterfly Park, and Elante mall when the heat is too much. Pinjore Gardens, about 20 km out on the Kalka road, makes a good half-day and pairs naturally with a run up toward Kasauli.
When is the best time to visit Chandigarh?
October to March. The Rose Garden peaks in February, when the festival is on. May and June are genuinely hot on the plains — 40 degrees and more — and the monsoon is humid, so if you are coming down from the hills in summer, plan the sightseeing for early morning and evening.
