Kinnaur, Sangla and Chitkul tour from Kangra

About the trip
To the last village on the old road.
Kinnaur is the Himachal fewer travellers reach — the Sutlej cutting a deep gorge, apple orchards and chilgoza pine on the slopes, and the snow pyramid of Kinnaur Kailash watching over it all. The old Hindustan–Tibet road threads the valley, carved into the cliffs.
The green Sangla valley leads to Chitkul, the last inhabited village before the Tibet border, and Kalpa looks straight across at Kinnaur Kailash from its wooden temples. We drive the whole route from Kangra, with halts timed to the mountain light.
How it runs from here: we break the drive at Narkanda or Sarahan going in rather than pushing through — the old Hindustan–Tibet road along the Sutlej is cut into cliffs and is not a road to be finishing after dark. Fuel and food thin out past Reckong Peo. Kalpa is where we build in the extra night, because waking up opposite Kinnaur Kailash is the thing people remember. Foreign nationals should tell us early so we can stop for the Inner Line Permit at Peo.

Kinnaur, Sangla & Chitkul — questions travellers ask
Do we need a permit for Kinnaur?
Indian nationals do not, for Sangla, Chitkul and Kalpa. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the stretch beyond Reckong Peo toward the Tibet border; it is issued at Reckong Peo with passport copies and photographs. Chitkul itself sits close to the border, so carry photo ID whatever your nationality.
What is at Chitkul?
It is the last inhabited village on the Indian side of the Baspa valley, at about 3,450 m, with wooden houses, a Mathi Devi temple and the river running clear below. There is not a great deal to do, and that is the appeal. The road stops there — beyond is the border zone.
When is the best time to visit Kinnaur?
April to June, and September to October. The apple harvest in September is a lovely time to be in the valley. Avoid the monsoon: the Sutlej gorge road through Kinnaur is one of the most landslide-prone in Himachal and July and August close it regularly. Chitkul gets snowed in through winter and largely empties out.
How difficult is the drive?
The old Hindustan–Tibet road is carved into the cliffs above the Sutlej and there are exposed, narrow stretches with falling rock. It is spectacular and it demands a driver who knows it. We break the run at Narkanda or Sarahan going in rather than pushing through in one day.
Is Kalpa worth a night?
Yes — it is the one place on the route where you wake up looking straight at Kinnaur Kailash across the valley, and the light on it at sunrise is the reason people come. The village has old wooden temples and an easy walk down to Roghi. One night is the minimum; two if you can spare it.
