Spiti Valley road trip from Kangra

Seven to nine days through the cold desert — Sarahan, Kalpa, Tabo, Kaza and Chandratal, returning over Kunzum and through the Atal Tunnel to Manali. Kaza sits near 3,800 m, so the plan gains height deliberately slowly and builds in an acclimatisation day. The Manali side is usually open only mid-June to mid-October. About the trip

A journey to the middle land.

Spiti — the 'middle land' between India and Tibet — is a high cold desert of ochre cliffs, whitewashed gompas and impossibly blue skies. It is a serious mountain journey, and one of the most rewarding drives in the Himalaya.

We run it carefully, with proper acclimatisation: Key monastery clinging to its hill, Kibber and Komic among the highest villages on earth, the fossil village of Langza, the Pin valley, and the unreal turquoise of Chandratal lake.

How it runs from here: this is the most demanding trip we run, and the itinerary is built around altitude rather than around distance. Going in through Kinnaur means you gain height over three days instead of three hours, which is the single biggest thing that keeps people well. Fuel stops are far apart past Reckong Peo, mobile signal is intermittent and non-existent at Chandratal, and the roads beyond Kaza are unmetalled. None of that is a problem with the right vehicle and a driver who has done it — it is a serious problem without.

The plan we run

Day by day.

Day 1 — Day 8

The single most important thing about this trip is height: Kaza is around 3,800 m and Kunzum higher still. The plan gains altitude deliberately slowly, and the Kaza villages day exists to let you acclimatise. The Manali side is usually open only mid-June to mid-October; outside that we run it as an out-and-back from Shimla.

Good to know

Spiti Valley — questions travellers ask

When is Spiti open, and which route do you take?

The Kinnaur route via Shimla, Sarahan and Kalpa is open most of the year and is the one we use going in, because it gains height gradually. The Manali route over Kunzum Pass is only open roughly June to October. Doing the circuit — in via Kinnaur, out via Kunzum and the Atal Tunnel — is the best way round, and it needs that summer window.

Is altitude sickness a real risk?

Yes. Kaza sits at about 3,800 m and Komic and Chandratal are higher. That is why we go in the long way, so you gain height over days rather than hours, and why the itinerary has rest built in rather than a race to the top. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should speak to a doctor first, and we will restructure the plan around a slower ascent if asked.

Do we need permits for Spiti?

Indian nationals need no permit for the main Spiti circuit. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the stretch through upper Kinnaur near the border, which is issued at Reckong Peo or Shimla — bring passport copies and photographs. Tell us your nationalities when you book so we can build the stop in.

What are the roads actually like?

Mixed, and honestly rough in parts. The old Hindustan–Tibet road through Kinnaur is cut into cliffs with sections of loose surface; beyond Kaza the roads to Chandratal and over Kunzum are unmetalled. This is not a drive to attempt in a hired hatchback, and it is why the trip needs a driver who has done it before.

Where do we stay, and is there mobile signal?

Guesthouses and homestays — simple, clean and warm, but not hotels. Chandratal is tented camps only, with no permanent structures. Signal is patchy: BSNL and Jio work in Kaza and some villages, and there is none at Chandratal. Tell family at home to expect gaps rather than worry about them.

How many days does Spiti really need?

Seven at an absolute minimum from Kangra, and eight or nine is the honest answer for the full circuit with proper acclimatisation. Anyone offering it in four or five days is either skipping half of it or driving you too high too fast.

When is Spiti Valley open, and what is the best time to go?

Mid-June to mid-October for the full circuit — Kunzum Pass on the Manali side is closed by snow until the BRO clears it, usually around mid-June. Outside that window we run it as an out-and-back from the Shimla and Kinnaur side, which stays open longer. Conditions can shift within a day even in season.

Will we get altitude sickness in Spiti?

Kaza sits near 3,800 m and Kunzum higher still, so it is a real consideration rather than a formality. The plan gains height deliberately slowly — Sarahan, then Kalpa, then Tabo — and builds in an acclimatisation day at Kaza before the high villages. Tell us about any heart or breathing condition when you book.

Our price promise

The lowest rate you’ll find for this trip — or we beat it.

We don’t publish a rate card, because an honest fare depends on your dates, your group and the road. What we do promise: ask us before you book anywhere, and if you’re already holding a written quote for the same car, the same route and the same all-in inclusions, send us the screenshot. We’ll beat it — and on the rare trip where we honestly can’t, we’ll tell you straight instead of wasting your day.

  1. 01

    Tell us the plan

WhatsApp your dates, your group and where you want to go. You get one all-in fare — car, driver, fuel, tolls, parking and permits — usually within the hour.

  2. 02

    Compare it openly

Check it against any operator or app you like. Compare like for like: the same car, the same days, everything included — not a headline figure with extras added on later.

  3. 03

    We beat it

Send us the lower written quote and we’ll beat it. You book the owner-drivers direct, so there is no agent commission sitting inside our number to begin with.
