About this run

How we drive it.

This is the classic Himachal crossing and one of the better long drives in the state — down the Beas through Kullu to Mandi, then west into the Kangra valley with the Dhauladhar building on your right for the last two hours.

Seven hours is realistic. The Mandi–Kullu stretch is the unpredictable part; when it is slow the whole day stretches, and we would rather tell you that at the booking than at Pandoh.

Bir and Billing sit almost exactly on the route near Baijnath, so if you are heading that way anyway it is worth building in the stop rather than making a separate trip later.

Bir is roughly five and a half hours in and makes an excellent lunch stop — Tibetan food, monasteries, and the landing field if there is flying on.

You cross from the Beas catchment to the Kangra one at Jogindernagar. It is the moment the landscape changes completely.

Arriving tired

Seven hours means an easy evening. Kotwali Bazaar and dinner is enough; McLeodganj can wait for morning.
