How we drive it.

This is a full day in the car and we will not pretend otherwise: eight hours, and more if the Mandi–Kullu stretch is slow. The advantage over the alternatives is simply that it is one vehicle and one driver, and you stop when you want to rather than when a bus does.

The road leaves Una district through Hamirpur, joins the Beas near Mandi and then follows the river up through Kullu — one of the better long drives in the state, particularly the last two hours.

For most people it works best off the morning train, reaching Manali in the evening. If you are arriving late, we usually suggest a night in Mandi or Kullu instead of driving the hill road tired, and we will say so rather than take the longer booking.
