The Kangra–Manali road is a day of good driving: the tea gardens to Palampur, the Baijnath temple, then over into the Beas valley at Mandi and up through Kullu with the river alongside. Six unhurried hours with a lunch halt we already know is good.

    Anywhere in Kangra

    Early. This is six hours of hill road and the last thing you want is the Kullu valley after sunset.

    Palampur and Baijnath

    Through the tea gardens and past the Baijnath Shiv temple — the easy, pretty first third.

    Jogindernagar to Mandi

    Over into the Beas catchment. Mandi is the usual food stop and has the cleanest facilities on this road.

    Pandoh and the gorge

    The dam, then the narrow stretch along the Beas. This section is slow when there is roadwork, which there often is.

    Bhuntar and Kullu

    The airport turn and the valley proper, the river beside you the rest of the way.

Do nothing on arrival day

Six hours of hill road is enough. Hadimba temple and Old Manali are a short walk or hop and make a gentle first evening; save Solang for the morning.

Solang and the Atal Tunnel

Both are a half-day from Manali. Leave before 10am in season or the Solang road becomes a queue rather than a drive.

Going further

The tunnel puts Sissu and Lahaul within a day trip, and Keylong within reach. Kunzum and the Spiti side are seasonal — usually mid-June to mid-October.
