About the trip
The Mother's darshan, then the valley.
This trip joins the north's two great draws — the pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi and the beauty of the Kashmir valley — into one seamless drive from Kangra. You climb to the Mata's cave above Katra first, then carry on over the Pir Panjal to Srinagar.
In the valley there are the shikaras and houseboats of Dal Lake, the high meadow and gondola of Gulmarg, the Lidder valley at Pahalgam and the glacier road at Sonmarg. One car and driver stay with you from the yatra to the last garden and home.
How it runs from here: the joint of this trip is Katra to Srinagar, about 270 km over the Pir Panjal through the Jawahar tunnel — a good road, but one prone to convoy holds and weather closures. We check the highway status the night before and start early. The rest of it is one car and one driver from your door in Kangra through the yatra, over the pass, around the whole valley and home, which is unusual: most packages hand you over at the state line.

How many days does this really need?
Eight is realistic; seven only works if the darshan goes quickly. The drive from Kangra to Katra is a day, the yatra a day, Katra to Srinagar a day, then four days for the valley and a day home. We would rather build the trip at eight than have you rushing a 12 km climb.
What is the drive from Katra to Srinagar like?
About 270 km on the Jammu–Srinagar national highway, six to eight hours through the Jawahar tunnel and over the Pir Panjal. It is a good road but a busy one, prone to convoy holds and weather closures in winter. We start early and check the highway status before setting off.
Can we do the darshan and Kashmir with the same car and driver?
That is the point of the trip. One car and one driver from your door in Kangra, waiting in Katra through the yatra, on over the pass, through the whole valley and home. No handovers to a local operator halfway, which is what most packages do.
What is the best time for both halves?
March to October suits both. April adds the tulips in Srinagar; May and June give the best meadows at Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Avoid deep winter for this combination — the Katra track ices and the Jawahar tunnel highway is unreliable.
Is the pace manageable for elders?
The Kashmir half is gentle and largely car-based. The Vaishno Devi climb is the demanding part, and that is exactly what the pony, palki and helicopter options exist for — we arrange them and plan the day around them. We also keep the driving days from being back-to-back where we can.
