A peeth above the lake.
Shri Naina Devi sits on a hilltop in Bilaspur, one of the revered Shakti Peethas, looking down over the wide Govind Sagar reservoir. The road there is gentle and the darshan unhurried — comfortable for families and elders.
A ropeway carries you the last stretch to the temple, or you can walk the steps. We plan the aarti timing, keep the halts close, and can fold in Chintpurni or Anandpur Sahib to make a full Devi-darshan day.
How it runs from here: the road out through Una and Bilaspur is one of the gentlest in our whole list, which is exactly why we suggest this trip for families travelling with elders. We time the arrival for the aarti rather than for a convenient departure, and we park as high as vehicles are allowed so the walk to the ropeway is short. On the way back, Chintpurni sits naturally on the route if you want to make it a two-temple day.

Naina Devi — questions travellers ask
How far is Naina Devi from Kangra?
About 145 km, four to four and a half hours, through Una and Bilaspur. It sits on a hilltop above the Govind Sagar reservoir, so the last stretch is a climb — but the road is good and the gradient gentle by Himachal standards.
Is there a ropeway to the temple?
Yes, and it is the easy way up for anyone who would struggle with the steps. It runs through the day and closes in high wind. When it is shut or the queue is long, the stairway is the alternative — steep, but with rest points and shade for much of it.
Can Naina Devi be combined with Chintpurni?
Easily, and most pilgrims do. Chintpurni is roughly 80 km back toward Una and fits naturally on the return. Anandpur Sahib is also close by if you want to add the Takht. Two days lets you do all three without a pre-dawn scramble.
When is the temple busiest?
Both Navratris — spring and autumn — and Shravan Ashtami in July or August, when the hill is packed and the wait for darshan can run to hours. Ordinary weekdays outside those periods are calm. Whatever the season we start early, because the queue grows through the morning.
Is it manageable for elders?
It is one of the gentler Shakti Peethas to reach, which is why we suggest it for families with older members. The ropeway removes the hard part, the road is easy, and we can park close. The final approach and the temple courtyard still involve some walking and standing.
Can Naina Devi and Chintpurni be done in one day?
Yes, if you start early — they sit on the same road up from the plains, about two hours apart, and one to two days covers the pair comfortably. Adding the four Kangra-valley temples turns it into the full six Devi Darshan, which is two days.
