About the trip
The Ganga where it meets the plains.
Haridwar and Rishikesh sit a few kilometres apart where the Ganga finally leaves the Himalaya — one an ancient temple town of ghats and evening aarti, the other the yoga capital of ashrams, rope bridges and rafts. Together they make a short, soulful trip.
You can watch the lamps float at Har Ki Pauri, cross the Lakshman and Ram Jhula, sit for a class at an ashram or take on the rapids, and slip up to Neelkanth Mahadev in the hills above. We drive you the loop from Kangra and back.
How it runs from here: nine to ten hours out via Chandigarh and Saharanpur, which is why three days is the practical floor and four is the comfortable answer. Both towns are compact once you arrive, so the middle days involve almost no driving. Everything is scheduled around the aartis — Har Ki Pauri at Haridwar and Triveni Ghat at Rishikesh — and we get you there early enough to sit near the water rather than behind a crowd.

Haridwar & Rishikesh — questions travellers ask
How far is Haridwar from Kangra?
About 400 km and nine to ten hours via Chandigarh and Saharanpur. It is a long driving day at each end, which is why three days is the practical minimum and four is more comfortable.
What time is the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri?
Around sunset, so roughly 6 pm in summer and closer to 5.30 pm in winter, and there is a morning aarti too. Get there at least half an hour early — the ghat fills quickly and the steps closest to the water go first. Bags and shoes are best left in the car.
What is the difference between Haridwar and Rishikesh?
Haridwar is the older pilgrimage town — ghats, temples, the aarti, and one of the four Kumbh Mela sites. Rishikesh, about 25 km upstream, is the ashram and adventure town: yoga schools, the Lakshman and Ram Jhula bridges, the Beatles Ashram and the rafting. They are a short drive apart and complement each other.
Can we take the cable cars to Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi?
Yes, both run from Haridwar and both are far easier than the climbs. Mansa Devi is the busier of the two. There is a combined ticket, and the queues are shortest early. Note these are also two of the shrines that some operators fold into a longer Devi Darshan circuit.
Why is September to June the season?
The monsoon is the reason. From late June to early September the Ganga runs high and brown, rafting stops, and the ghats at Haridwar can be closed for safety when the river is in spate. The rest of the year is straightforward, with October to March the most pleasant.
When is the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri?
At dusk, so the exact hour moves with the season — we time the day around it rather than publish a clock time we cannot stand behind. Ask us closer to your dates and we will tell you what the drivers actually see when they are there.
