About the trip

The first taste of Rajasthan, in under a week.

Not everyone has a fortnight for the full desert circuit. This is the shorter answer: the three places most first-time visitors want — Jaipur for the forts and the shopping, Ajmer for the Dargah Sharif, and Pushkar for its Brahma temple, the fifty-two ghats and one of the most atmospheric evening aartis in the country.

It also pairs naturally with a pilgrimage: many of the families we drive to the Devi temples of Kangra ask for Ajmer and Pushkar afterwards. One car and the same driver stay with you throughout, so you keep your bags in the boot and set your own hours at each stop.

What you’ll see

  • Amber Fort, Jaigarh & Jal Mahal
  • City Palace, Jantar Mantar & Hawa Mahal
  • Jaipur’s bazaars — block-print, jootis & jewellery
  • The Dargah Sharif at Ajmer
  • The Brahma temple & Pushkar lake ghats
  • Evening aarti on the ghats

Suggested itinerary

    Kangra to the plains

The drive out of the hills with a halt near Delhi or Behror, so the second day starts fresh.

Into the Pink City by midday; the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, then the old-city bazaars in the evening.

  3. D3

    Jaipur — the forts

Amber Fort and Jaigarh in the morning, Jal Mahal and Nahargarh for the view, and Chokhi Dhani or a rooftop dinner if you like.

    Jaipur to Ajmer & Pushkar

The Dargah Sharif at Ajmer, then the short climb over to Pushkar for the Brahma temple and the ghats at aarti time.

    Pushkar to Delhi NCR

A slow morning by the lake, then the drive north with a halt on the way home.

  6. D6

Good to know

Jaipur, Ajmer & Pushkar — questions travellers ask

How many days do I need for Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar?

Five to six days from Kangra, including the two travel days on the road. If you join us at Delhi or Jaipur it comes down to three or four days on the ground: two for Jaipur’s forts and bazaars, and one for Ajmer and Pushkar together, which sit about 15 km apart.

Can this be added to a Devi Darshan or Himachal trip?

Yes, and it often is. Families who finish the Kangra-valley Devi Darshan with us frequently continue to Ajmer and Pushkar, or add Jaipur on the way back to Delhi. Because the same car and driver run the whole thing, joining the two trips only costs the extra days, not a second booking.

When is the best time to visit Jaipur and Pushkar?

September to March, when the days are pleasant and the evenings cool. The Pushkar camel fair falls in November and is worth planning around — tell us early, as rooms fill months ahead. April to June is very hot, and July–August is humid but green and quiet.

Is Pushkar suitable for elderly travellers?

Yes. The ghats and the Brahma temple involve some walking and steps, and shoes come off at the temple, but the distances are short and we park close. We keep the timings early or late to avoid the heat and plan unhurried halts — the same way we handle the Devi Darshan for senior pilgrims.
