About the trip
Two desert cities, at an unhurried pace.
Jodhpur and Jaisalmer are the Rajasthan of the postcards — one a blue-washed old town crouched under the biggest fort in the state, the other a living fort of golden sandstone with families still inside its walls, an hour from the dunes. They sit far enough west that rushing them by train and hired cabs takes the pleasure out of it.
We drive the whole route from Kangra so one car carries you from the Dhauladhar to the Thar and back — Osian’s temples on the way in, the Sam dunes and a desert camp for a night, and Bikaner or Ranakpur worked in on the way home if the days allow.
How it runs from here: this is the far west, and the distances are real — Jodhpur to Jaisalmer is about 285 km and five hours of open desert road, with Jaipur two days behind you. Seven to eight days is the honest figure from Kangra. The desert night at Sam or Khuri is the highlight for most people and needs to be booked ahead in season. October to March only: April onward the heat out there stops being a discomfort and starts being a problem.

Jodhpur & Jaisalmer — questions travellers ask
When is the best time to visit Jodhpur and Jaisalmer?
October to March. The desert days are warm and clear and the nights genuinely cold, which is exactly what you want for the forts and a night at the dunes. April to June is punishing out west — 45°C is normal — and the monsoon months are humid, so we point travellers to Udaipur and Mount Abu instead in July–September.
Is the desert camp night worth it, and what is it like?
For most travellers, yes — it is the part they remember. The camps at Sam, about 40 km from Jaisalmer, run camel or jeep rides to the dunes for sunset, folk music and dinner, and tented rooms with proper beds and attached bathrooms. Tell us the comfort level you want and we book accordingly; the stay stays your own choice and budget, as always.
Can you shorten it to just Jaisalmer, or extend it into the full circuit?
Both. Dropping Bikaner brings it to six or seven days, and joining us at Delhi or Jodhpur instead of Kangra saves two more. Going the other way, add Udaipur, Ranakpur and Pushkar and you have the full 11–13 day Rajasthan circuit we run from Kangra.
How long is the drive, and how do you break it up?
Kangra to Jodhpur is roughly 1,000 km and Jaisalmer another 280 km beyond it, so we split the outbound into two comfortable days with a halt near Delhi or Behror rather than one marathon. Inside Rajasthan the daily legs are four to six hours on good highways, with tea stops and lunch halts we know.
