The drive from Kangra to Manali is one of the nicest day-long road trips in Himachal — you cross from the Kangra valley into the Kullu valley, trading tea gardens for the Beas river, and the scenery changes the whole way. It is about 205 km and, realistically, six hours of driving plus your halts. Here is how the route runs and where to stop.
The route, in brief
From Kangra you head out past Palampur’s tea gardens and the ancient Baijnath Shiva temple, then the road climbs and drops into the Beas valley at Mandi — the halfway temple town. From Mandi you follow the river up through Kullu and on to Manali. It is a good highway most of the way, with the prettiest stretch the last couple of hours alongside the Beas. A morning start gets you into Manali with the evening free.
Where to break the drive
The best stops to stretch your legs and see something on the way:
- Palampur — tea gardens, Neugal Khad and a good coffee terrace.
- Baijnath — the 13th-century Vaidyanath Shiva temple, right by the road.
- Mandi — the Beas-side “Chhoti Kashi” temple town, the natural lunch halt.
- Kullu — the Dussehra ground and the shawl weavers; Bijli Mahadev above.
- The Beas riverside — the last hour into Manali, and the prettiest.
One-way drop or round trip?
If Manali is your base for a few days, a one-way drop is cleanest — you are not paying for the car to sit idle. If you want to see the valley on the way and keep the car for Solang, the Atal Tunnel and Sissu, a round trip with the same driver is the easier, friendlier option. We run both — see the Kangra to Manali taxi page, or if you are starting from up the hill, Dharamshala to Manali. For a fuller Kullu–Manali holiday with the sights built in, the Kullu & Manali tour lays it out.
A note on the driving
These are hill roads, and Manali weekends and the season peak can slow the last stretch badly. A driver who knows where the jams form and where to break saves you real time and nerves — that is the whole case for a car and driver over self-driving a hired car you don’t know on roads you don’t know. We do this run constantly; the timings above are lived, not looked up. Every fare is one all-in figure, confirmed on WhatsApp before you leave, with no advance — the same way all our outstation trips work.
