The rest is straightforward transport for people who live here: cars to Amb Andaura and Una for the trains, to Gaggal for flights, and the long drives to Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab that are awkward and slow by bus from this side of the valley.

Jwala Ji
Twenty minutes up the road — the natural flames, burning from the rock with nothing feeding them. Early is quiet.

Maa Baglamukhi at Bankhandi
The temple our own family keeps as kuldevi, and the Raghunath temple beside it. Usually taken in the same visit as Jwala Ji.

Pong Dam
The Maharana Pratap Sagar reservoir — a huge sheet of water where you expect hills. Nagrota Surian on the far shore is the birdwatching side.

Haripur and Guler
The old Katoch seat, and the birthplace of the Kangra school of miniature painting. Ruins rather than a museum, but the setting is the point.

Kangra town and the fort are an hour north if you want to make a longer day of it.

Winter birds at Pong
From roughly November to March the reservoir fills with migratory birds — bar-headed geese in thousands. Nagrota Surian is where to be, early.
Water levels
The Pong shoreline moves a great deal between seasons. What is a beach in May is underwater in September; we go to whichever access point is actually working.
Amb Andaura
The Vande Bharat station is about forty minutes south, which makes Dehra an easy base for anyone arriving by that train.
