Jawali is a quiet tehsil town on the low, warm side of the district, close to the Pong Dam backwaters and about an hour from us at Kangra.
There is not much local taxi supply here, which is precisely why people pre-book. Most of what we do from Jawali is getting people out — to Pathankot or Amb Andaura for a train, to Gaggal for a flight, up to Dharamshala for hospital appointments, or straight through to Chandigarh and Delhi.
The reservoir is the other draw. Nagrota Surian and the wetland edge are close by, and in winter the bird season brings visitors who want a car for the day to work along the shoreline.

Jawali is wetland country rather than hill country, and in winter it is one of the more interesting corners of the district.

The main birdwatching point on the Pong. Between November and March, first light here is the best hour of the year in this valley.

The Pong is a Ramsar site and the birds are the reason to be here. Without something to look through, it is a large grey lake.
Summer is the wrong season
April to June the birds have gone and the flats are hot and bare. We will tell you plainly that this day is a winter day.
