About the trip
Temple town and sacred water.
Mandi earns its name 'Chhoti Kashi' — a riverside old town packed with stone Shiva temples like Bhutnath and Triloknath, ghats on the Beas and a big Shivratri fair. It sits at the crossroads of the valley, an easy drive from Kangra.
Above it, two sacred lakes: Rewalsar, or Tso Pema, holy at once to Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs, ringed by monasteries and a great Guru Padmasambhava statue; and Prashar, higher still, where a three-tiered pagoda temple to the sage Prashar looks over a lake with a slow-drifting floating island.
How it runs from here: Mandi is four hours out on the main Manali road, so the first day is easy going. Prashar is what makes this an overnight rather than a day trip — the 50 km climb from Mandi is narrow and rough and takes two to three hours each way, and it is not something to attempt on top of a full driving day. We check the state of that road before your dates, because snow shuts it in winter and the monsoon makes it unwise.

Why is Mandi called Chhoti Kashi?
For the density of its old Shiva temples — more than eighty stone shikhara shrines around the town and the Beas ghats, including Bhutnath, Triloknath and Panchvaktra. The Shivratri fair in February or March fills the town with village deities and is the best time to see it alive.
What is special about Rewalsar lake?
It is holy to three faiths at once — Buddhists know it as Tso Pema and associate it with Guru Padmasambhava, Hindus with the sage Lomas, and Sikhs with Guru Gobind Singh, who stayed here. A large Padmasambhava statue looks over it and there are monasteries, a gurudwara and temples around the shore. The floating islands of reed are part of the local lore.
Can a car reach Prashar Lake?
Yes, the road goes to the lake, but it is a narrow, rough climb of about 50 km from Mandi and takes two to three hours. It is passable for a good vehicle in fair weather. Snow closes it in winter and the monsoon makes it unwise, so it is really a March-to-November proposition.
Can this be done in one day from Kangra?
Mandi and Rewalsar can, at about 150 km and four hours each way — a long day but a real one. Adding Prashar means an overnight, because that climb is not something to do on top of a full day's driving. Two days covers all three comfortably.
Is the floating island at Prashar real?
There is a mass of matted vegetation on the lake that genuinely drifts and changes position, and local belief holds that its movement carries meaning. Nobody can tell you where it will be on the day you visit — which is rather the point.
What is the best time to visit Prashar Lake?
March to November. The road up is narrow, steep and slow at the best of times and snow closes it through deep winter. Late September and October give the clearest views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal from the ridge above the lake.
